Vestal Dollars for Scholars

The Dollars for Scholars program began in 1958 with Dr. Irving Fradkin in Fall River, MA. His goal was to collect $1 from everyone in the town to create scholarships for children. His first dollars were collected from John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. Dollars for Scholars became a national organization in 1961, and the all-volunteer Vestal Dollars for Scholars program was started in 1990 by Mike Pavlovich, Julie Scullard and Gill Chubb.

Organization Goals
- To increase the number of students receiving scholarships.
- To increase the scholarships monies available to Vestal School District students.
- To assist students of varied abilities with scholarship dollars.
- To give hope and encouragement to students.
How do we raise money?
- Annual "Dollars for Scholars Phone-A-Thon"
- Wreath sale
- Golf Tournament

How do we award scholarships?
- Grades
- Appraisal by counselors
- Activities:clubs,sports,community service
- Work experience
- Plans - goals
- Unusual family or personal circumstances
- Extra points if they have worked at a phonathon, pancake breakfast,etc.

What you can do to help?
- Invite our president, Barry Klipsch (785-6668), to come and talk to your organization.
- Sponsor a scholarship.
- Tell your friends about Dollars for Scholars.
- When people retire -start a scholarship in their name.
- Establish a memorial.
- Make a donation.
- Volunteer your time at one of our fundraisers.
Permanent funds
- How to start? Contact Barry Klipsch (785-6668).
- How much? $500 to start, $500 per year until $6000 is reached. At that point, it becomes a permanent fund and scholarships will start to be awarded.
- Examples: Frank J. Avery Memorial Scholarship, Carol Budnikas Memorial Scholarship.
