Vestal High School seniors awarded writing honors
Six seniors at Vestal High
School have recently been recognized with several awards from the Scholastic
Writing Awards program as well as the Tri-Cities Women’s Club Writing Contest.
Students in English classes at Vestal High School have recently been recognized with several awards from the Scholastic Writing Awards program as well as the Tri-Cities Women’s Club Writing Contest.
The Vestal High School
English department is pleased to announce that Emma Purdy won a Gold Key award
in the 2019 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards for her short story. As a Gold
Key winner, Emma’s work is currently being considered for national recognition at
the National level in New York City.
Two other seniors won Silver
Key awards, Sumaya Hardi for her personal essay and Tomiko Nicholson for
poetry. Receiving an Honorable Mention in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category
was Vishnu Kamagere.
Two more talented student
writers received awards in the local Tri-Cities Women’s Club Youth Poetry and
Short Story Contest. Jonathan Shapiro took first place in poetry for his piece
entitled “I am Words.” Placing second was John Li with his short story “A
Poacher’s Predicament.”
As a result of his
first-place award, Jon’s poem will move up for judging by the Central District
of the New York State Federation of Women’s Clubs.
