Section IV and STAC Wrestling Champion Derek Osman, son of Tim and Debbie Osman of Vestal, signed his letter of intent accepting a wrestling scholarship from Division I University of Buffalo. The signing took place on Monday, June 12, with family, teammates and other friends cheering him on.
Ranked sixth in New York State, Derek Osman has been on the Golden Bears varsity wrestling squad for five years. Four of those years, he has pinned down four Section IV and four STAC championships, the only four-time Sectional champion in Vestal history! He has captured the Vestal High School all-time record for wins – 175, the record since wrestling began at Vestal in 1949. And he’s done it all with grace and good sportsmanship, earning Osman the Section IV’s Sportsmanship Award twice in his career. The only Golden Bear to compete in the Eastern State Tournament, he has also spent four years on the varsity football team and one year on the track in Dick Hoover Stadium.
Off the mat, Osman is a youth volunteer and a member of the Vestal High School Varsity Club. He looks forward to joining the UB Bulls in the fall.
