Congratulations to Alister Barber, Sophia Chiu, Kara Dhakal and Robin Flint on their winning entries! They were notified by mail of their awards over the weekend of January 6, 2023. They will receive their awards on Sunday, February 5, 2023, during an Awards ceremony at the Clemens Center, Elmira, beginning at noon.

Seniors Sophia Chiu and Kara Dhakal both received Gold Key Awards. Sophia won her Gold Key in the category of Drawing for her charcoal piece entitled “Concealed.” She also received an Honorable Mention in the same category. Kara’s print “In Plain Sight” received a Gold Key in Printmaking.
Also winning Honorable Mentions were ninth-grader Alister Barber in Comic Art (Prettiest Clown Around”) and seventh-grader Robin Flint in Digital Art (“The Armchair”).
The winning art of all regional winners will be on display in the Arnot Art Museum’s East Gallery from February 7 – March 4, 2023. Regional winners will be highlighted at the museum during an artists’ reception following the Awards ceremony on February 5. The Arnot Art Museum is located at 235 Lake Street, Elmira, NY.
Gold Key pieces by Sophia Chiu and Kara Dhakal will go to New York City for the National Scholastic judging this Spring.
The Vestal art educators who taught these student artists include Melissa Restuccia, Vestal Central School District Art chair, and Christine Aloi and Christopher Gilligan, Vestal Middle School art teachers.
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers celebrates the creative achievement of America’s teens and, in 1923, founded the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in order to offer recognition and scholarships to students based on their artistic talents.
