Students win awards and prizes for writing

Vestal High School’s English Department is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s East Region-at-Large Scholastic Writing Awards, as well as winners of the Tri-Cities Women’s Club Writing Contest. 


Sindi Zhou, a ninth-grader, won a Silver Key award for her personal essay “Mama” and an Honorable Mention for her flash fiction piece “Engel to Himmel.” Senior Brendyn Brooks-Shoemaker received an Honorable Mention in Poetry for his poem entitled “Bang.”

Brendyn and another senior, Sonia Horowitz, took first place in their categories in the Tri-Cities Women’s Club Writing Contest. Brendyn in Poetry for “Futile” and Sonia in Short Story for “Grief of Violets.” Winning third place in Short Story was senior Jozlyn Korsak for her piece “Lavishly Mudbound.”

Congratulations to these incredibly talented student writers! Senior Brendyn Brooks-Shoemaker’s future plans include enlisting in the U.S. Army after graduation, while Sonia Horowitz plans to enroll at SUNY Geneseo to study Creative Writing. Best wishes to them both!
