Glenwood students planning to spread kindness for Valentine's Day

The close relationship between Glenwood Elementary and the Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center has grown over several years as second-graders have practiced their reading skills in the past by going up the hill to read to residents there, hosting a Reader's Theatre and making friends. Older students who were members of the Helping Hands Club have gone up the last couple of years to visit the residents and play games, like Bingo.

So, it is no surprise that thoughts would be with the Vestal Park residents during this time of isolation. Though they can't visit their friends this year, Glenwood students still plan to send their love, through Valentines. Principal McSain has kicked off February, which happens to be National Kindness Month, with a gentle request for students to spread kindness with signs of love for the Vestal Park residents. From now until February 10, students attending school in-person will make Valentines and bookmarks during indoor recess. Those learning remotely will also make Valentines at home, while fourth-graders are writing letters to the residents. All the Valentines, bookmarks and letters collected will be delivered to Vestal Park on February 12.

Within the school, students will also be playing "Kindness Bingo" throughout this month. Every student received a special Bingo card, with each square denoting an activity they can try to help spread kindness at home, in school and in the community. Examples of different squares include "Compliment 5 People, Ask a Parent about Their Day, Volunteer to do a Chore that Isn't Yours, and Invite Someone New to Sit with You."

Once a student completes their Kindness Bingo Card, their name will be added to the school's Kindness Pledge banner hanging in the main hallway!
