Special Education & Related Services

Helping our students realize a lifetime of growth!

Vestal Central School District offers a comprehensive continuum of Special Education and related services to meet the needs of students with learning differences. Our District’s offerings include, but are not limited to, Consultant Teacher Services, Resource Room, Special Classes and Related Services.

The District’s beliefs regarding special education services are firmly grounded in a commitment to developing supports for students in their home schools in an integrated, least restrictive environment, as much as is appropriate for individual students. Vestal also utilizes community placements off our campus for those students who need such supports.

Our Special Education Services are designed to facilitate learning that allows our students access to curriculum leading toward a New York State Regents diploma. Our goal for all of our students is to obtain the academic, community, vocational, daily living and social skills to achieve a satisfying adulthood as a lifelong learners and responsible, contributing citizens within their community.

Any questions regarding our Special Education and related services can be directed to our Director of Special Education Katherine Mazourek. Please see her information on the top right of this page.

Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)

In New York State, every school district has a Committee on Preschool Education, a program that provides services to children from 3 - 5 years of age who have or are at risk of having a developmental disability.

Committee on Special Education (CSE)

The Committee on Special Education reviews, discusses, analyzes, and evaluates the student's progress toward annual goals in order to address their unique needs related to the disability. They develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students with disabilities. This IEP is designed to result in student access, participation, and progress in the general education curriculum and address a student's other disability needs.

CSE & CPSE Meetings - School Delays or Closings

  • If there is a one- or two-hour delay on the date when a CSE or CPSE meeting is scheduled, and that meeting was to be held at 10:30 a.m. or after, the meeting will occur as scheduled.
  • If school is closed, meetings for that day will be canceled. The Special Education Office will contact you to reschedule.
Contact the Special Education Office at 607-757-2244 if you have questions or concerns.

FACE Trainings

FACE (Family and Community Engagement Center)

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Special Education (OSE) has created a coordinated and cohesive network of support. This support is focused on enhancing services and supports for students with disabilities from early childhood and school-age education to engagement in post-school opportunities. The network is called the OSE Educational Partnership and will increase district capacity using an intensive team approach to technical assistance and professional development that is implemented with consistency across New York State.

The Southeast and Southwest Family and Community Engagement Centers are able to assist by:
. Supporting families to be fully engaged in their child’s educational process
. Building collaborative relationships with schools, community and families
. Providing information and training to providers and families to improve outcomes for all students
. Providing regional learning opportunities, targeted skill groups and intensive partnerships for families, schools and the              community

The Southwest FACE Center will support families and schools in the BT and GST BOCES Regions. We work under the guidance of the NYSED Office of Special Education along with the Southwest Regional Partnership Center.
