Superintendent's Updates

November 18, 2020
The “matrix” utilized to determine movement from one Phase to another includes such factors as noted below. This list is not necessarily “all-inclusive.” (First addressed on District Website FAQs dated August 6, 2020):

  • The abatement of COVID-19 cases regionally and statewide;
  • Restrictions in place from NYS Governor’s Office and/or Broome County Health Department;
  • Daily screening results and number of quarantined individuals;
  • The District’s capacity to accommodate larger groups while maintaining rigorous health and safety protocols in the schools and on the buses;
  • Staffing levels in the classroom, nurse’s areas, and administrative positions;
  • Staffing levels in transportation.

Planning for Reopening Vestal Schools

On Monday, July 13, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that school districts in New York can follow plans to reopen for in-person schooling in September, if COVID-19 infection rates stay at 5% or lower in a given region.

The health and safety of our students, our staff, and their families is our top priority. We want students and employees to feel comfortable and safe returning to school. The submittal of the reopening plan to the NYS Education Department, linked below, was July 31st and addresses the objectives put forth from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), and the NYS Education Department (NYSED)  guidance documents. The main objective of the plan is the resumption of instruction while controlling the spread of COVID-19. The plan is considered a “living” document and is not a final draft. The implementation of the plan will be the main focus of District work starting now and progressing through September 11th. Continuous updates will be shared with students, parents, staff, and community.

IMPORTANT: The first day of instruction for students has changed to September 14, 2020.

To help inform our reopening plan, the District has sought feedback and input from stakeholders, including administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents/guardians of students, local health department officials and health care providers, employee unions and community groups. Engagement efforts included a School Messenger survey, and the District has formed a Steering Committee as well as sub committees that will channel feedback from stakeholders back to the Steering Committee. For your information, the framework of these committees is included in the right menu.
The District remains committed to communicating all elements of the reopening plan, once finalized, to students, parents and guardians, staff and visitors. The plan will be available to all stakeholders via the district website on this page beginning on July 31, 2020, and will be updated throughout the school year, as necessary, to respond to local circumstances.
We continue to encourage parents, staff and other stakeholders to share their thoughts about this process. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at [email protected]
